New call-to-action

Lewis Whitehurst, 16 from Baddeley Green, Stoke-on-Trent is currently exceeding on his journey as a Level 3 gas engineering apprentice just months into his journey at Achieve Training. Lewis is currently working closely alongside the team at Holdcroft Heating in Burslem embarking on a fantastic career servicing boilers, water heaters, breakdowns, fitting fireplaces and practicing brickwork and plastering.

Lewis explains: “I’ve only been at Achieve Training since September 2021 so I was really glad to jump straight into an apprenticeship as a gas engineer, it’s what I wanted to do as soon as I left school so I feel really lucky. Everyone is so lovely at Holdcroft Heating and I’ve learned so much on the job since I’ve been there.

I've really enjoyed my time so far with the team at Holdcroft Heating, everyone has been so welcoming and I love the banter you get within the team, it makes the day go fast and I pick up loads of skills and experience when I'm out on jobs. I was really grateful I'd got all my grades which helped me fast-track into the position at Holdcroft."

Lewis spends a combination of time in our training centre learning skills with guidance from our gas engineering tutors and time on-the-job. This gives Lewis a balance of training and work whilst being paid. Becoming a gas engineer is one of the hardest trade areas to learn at Achieve Training. But the hard work will certainly pay off with qualified self-employed gas engineers in Stoke-on-Trent reportedly earning over £30k per year according to

“Lewis is a very keen worker, he listens to his instructions and is a fantastic addition to the team. We’ve had so many apprentices previously through Achieve Training, many of which have been with our company for years and are still here today! Not only gas engineers but office workers too!” - Steve Holdcroft, Director of Holdcroft Heating.

Lewis continues: "I love being an apprentice gas engineer because I work on different things every day, one day I could be working on servicing boilers and the next day I could be out and about fitting fireplaces and plastering areas. It's definitely a versatile job but I am excited to be able to pick things up as I go. I never really expected I'd need to know plastering or brickwork in the role but its skills which are really handy to know for not just work but for everyday life. I’d recommend Achieve Training to anyone, I'm so glad I applied to their pre-apprenticeship programme as soon as I left school."

Wayne Rowley, Relationship Manager at Achieve Training states: "Lewis is a really lovely lad, he's very hardworking and he's older than his years. His hard work and determination really show in his day-to-day work. It's been a pleasure to guide him in his apprenticeship and I know he will do very well in his career".

Lewis is looking forward to continuing his progression with Holdcroft Heating to become a fully qualified gas engineer. If you are interested in seeking a career in gas engineering, check out our pre-apprenticeship programme in construction here.
