Top Five Tips When Writing an Apprenticeship Application

Applying for an apprenticeship job can be quite daunting. You want to sell yourself. You want to come across as someone the employer wants to interview. It’s all about first impressions with your CV and applying for a job takes time.

Here are the top five tips when writing an apprenticeship application.

1. Be specific to the role

Every apprenticeship application that you write should be unique and tailored to the role. The experience and skills can vary from role to role so make sure you double check that your CV or question answers are relevant to the job that you are applying for.

2. Sell Yourself

Remember to include all of your predicted grades and any other qualifications or grades that you hold. Be proud about what you are going to or have achieved. Include any other grade you might have, for example Music Exams, Duke of Edinburgh Awards or St Johns Ambulance qualifications.

3. Work Experience

Write down all your work experience, whether this is paid or unpaid work. If you don’t have any relevant experience, then consider taking the time to find some. This could be weekend work or volunteering with a local charity. Think about the roles you want to apply for and try to find relevant experience you can write about in your application.

4. Play to your strengths

Thank about what you are good at, what is relevant to the role and big it up! Give lots of examples, for example good communication skills are great to have in your CV. But when you get to an interview, you need to be able to back it up with evidence and talk about it.

If you are not sure about what to write about yourself, ask a friend or teacher.

Try to include any hobbies or interests that you have that influence you now. Saying you were in the Cubs aged 8 years old isn’t very current. Employers will want to know what you do now and how your interests and personality could fit into their business and teams.

5. Check, Check, Check

Before you submit your application, whether it be online or a postal application, make sure you...

• Check the closing date.
• Ask someone to read your application to check for spelling and grammar mistakes.
• Include some examples of your skills and experience, not just a list of strengths.
• Check your application is relevant to the job you are applying for.
• Save a copy of your application.
• Print off a copy of the job advert and your application (this will help the day before the interview to make sure you can answer any questions about your CV).
