Painting and Decorating is not all about wallpaper paste. There will always be houses and those walls, floors and ceilings will always need painting and decorating; the career options are endless from commercial buildings to homes and bridges.
Apprentice award nominee, Jordan Harrison, 19, has certainly found his style as he nears the completion of his two-year apprenticeship with Novus Property Solutions.
Jordan from Bentilee said: "I am currently on an apprenticeship with Novus Property Solutions and at PM Training continuing with my Level 2 qualification in Painting and Decorating as well as my Level 2 Functional Skills."
After leaving school Jordan always admired the benefits of an apprenticeship as he didn't enjoy the classroom or doing exams. His desire to get hands on with a paintbrush and learn vital skills led him down the apprenticeship pathway.
Doing a painting and decorating apprenticeship has enabled Jordan to learn about health and safety, including how to keep equipment and materials and how to use ladders and scaffolding. Preparation of the work area plays a large part including dust sheets and protective coverings. It's not just about paint brushes.
Jordan continued: "I love doing painting and decorating at PM Training because it's so creative, I never get bored and you are always doing something different every day.
I love the staff at PM Training, everyone is so supportive and approachable.
An apprenticeship is something I have always wanted to do since I finished school, I never did very well with exams and I have always wanted to do something more hands on.
This apprenticeship allows to me to be in work whilst still gaining my qualifications, it's a no-brainer really. I'm really happy."
Did you know? A career in painting and decorating could earn an average salary of £22k per year
An apprenticeship can lead to a number of opportunities and Jordan has found his skills have earned him a nomination for the 2018 Go Construct SkillBuild competition taking place in June.
Jordan said: "It's great to get involved with projects such as this as it gives us all the chance to enter real competitions.
My career goals are very much set around what I'm doing now and I don't feel the need to go onto further education such as University, the plan is to work my way up with Novus Property Solutions in the future."
From competitions to earning and learning, Jordan has found his style and a career in painting and decorating. Follow in his footsteps and view our current apprenticeship vacancies or book to attend our next open day.
