THE STORY BEHIND THE PRODUCTION

This spectacular piece of metalwork is proudly placed within the centre of a Newcastle-under-Lyme roundabout. Sitting at 2 metres high, it showcases the armature of the Hare and highlights the importance of the local wildlife.

The Hare is another part of some local commissions by Newcastle Borough Council, including The Trout, Buzzard and The Honey Bee. The sculpture, made by apprentices, Liam and Luke, with guidance from Artworks manager Phil Brown. 

 

 

MAKING THE HARE 

The sculpture is made from 7,500 recycled pieces of metal which creates the patchwork effect. It has also been galvanized to protect it from the elements.

The team used large pieces of a printed out drawing provided by Andy Edwards, this was then used to help create the initial structure of the hare, followed by using sheet metal to form the finished design.

It took the team approximately three months to complete the project.

“The Hare will be seen by regional and national judges alongside The Trout, Buzzard and Honey Bee which are all very popular and catch people’s attention. It’s fantastic that local businesses have helped to fund it – it shows they appreciate the benefits of an attractive town centre. The scheme hasn’t cost taxpayers a single penny extra"
