ABOUT YOUR EMPLOYER

Re-Form Heritage specialises in revitalising communities through the regeneration of their historic buildings.

We restore heritage buildings at risk of decay and demolition where the resurgence of an existing use, or the introduction of a new use, will have a beneficial effect on the local community.

ABOUT THE APPRENTICESHIP

To carry out high quality maintenance work at Re-Form Heritage’s Middleport Pottery site and other Re-Form Heritage properties as appropriate.

Physical Considerations

This post requires the post-holder to carry out duties of a physical nature, within defined manual handling restriction. These could include one or more of the following:

  • Manual work
  • Plastering
  • Painting
  • Bricklaying
  • Working at heights
  • Working in tenants’ domain (within Middleport Pottery)

Examples of work currently undertaken.

Repairs to floors, doors and windows; Maintaining tidy presentation of site; Keeping gutters clean; Fire and intruder alarm testing; Legionella testing; Electrical repairs; Car park maintenance; Checking on historic steam engine, narrowboat and Bath House; maintaining all boilers and monitoring pressures; reading utility metres; Repairs to signs; Touch up or repaint where required; Cutting lawns; Supporting contractors; Remedial works where/when required; Setting up for events; Changing bulbs; Fire evacuation support; Managing litter and waste collections and attending to slipped or broken cobbles/roof tiles.

Qualifications Required:

5 GCSE’s A-C (9-4) inc English & Maths

Working location:

Standard hours will be Monday to Friday, with occasional flexibility required during event/activity delivery days/times. Some occasional evening and weekend working may be required. Your main place of work will be Middleport Pottery and Harper Street.

KEY TASKS

Repairs

  • To carry out all the traditional duties of a multi-skilled tradesman, including plumbing, carpentry, wet trades and building plus related finishes, patching and making good tasks, as requested by the Maintenance Manager.
  • To report to the Maintenance Manager any additional items or defects encountered during the course of day-to-day work.
  • To ensure that work is carried out in accordance with all Health and Safety at Work regulations and codes of practice, including wearing protective clothing as supplied, and to attend training as requested (to include First Aid, Asbestos Awareness and fire extinguisher training)
  • To maintain up-to-date knowledge, with training where appropriate, of standards applicable to individual trade, and working in an historic building.
  • To carry out jobs according to instructions and to keep materials usage to a minimum consistent with required quality standards, obtaining approval whenever any substantial variation from orders is required.

Supplies

  • To collect necessary goods from stock or from suppliers.
  • To ensure that all tools, vehicles, equipment, and plant used are kept in good, clean working order and serviced regularly.

Administration

  • To collect job orders and arrange visits to keep pre-arranged appointments, as appropriate.
  • To keep accurate daily and weekly records of work carried out on job tickets and timesheets or portable computer, in accordance with procedures.

General

  • To develop a good knowledge of all aspects of construction
  • To maintain a professional and cordial relationship with Re-Form Heritage, Burleigh and tenants at Middleport Pottery and site visitors.
  • To carry out other duties appropriate to this post, as necessary.

REQUIREMENTS 

Skills Required:

  • Strong attention to detail
  • Good organisation skills, able to carry out efficiently a number of set tasks
  • Good communication skills

Personal Qualities:

  • Takes pride in own work
  • Ambitious
  • Team player
  • Interest in industrial heritage (desirable not essential)

Maths and English is used in this role through measurement and material requirement calculations, basic job costing, reading and comprehending procedures.
